The study phase

Planning is key
Once you commit to an exam, plan your study time realistically. Consider when you're most effective at studying - morning, afternoon, or evening. Create a schedule that allows for regular study sessions rather than cramming. This helps retain information better and reduces stress.

Mix it up
Use varied study methods to keep things interesting. Index cards can help with memorising key points, while flow diagrams can illustrate complex concepts. Explaining topics to a friend or colleague can deepen your understanding and highlight areas needing more clarity.

Take breaks
Looking after yourself is crucial. Eat well, stay hydrated, and incorporate breaks into your study plan to help maintain focus and prevent burnout. Reward yourself with activities you enjoy, like watching a favourite TV show or going out for a meal, to stay motivated.

The revision phase

Practice makes perfect
As the exam nears, focus on practicing questions under exam conditions. Set aside the correct amount of time for each question and ensure you're not disturbed. Carefully read and consider the requirements, noting what the examiner is asking for and what they are not.

Take practice exams under timed conditions to simulate the real exam environment. This helps you assess your progress and identify areas needing more focus. Even if you feel unprepared, practice exams are valuable for highlighting strengths and weaknesses.

Question planning
Structured answers are key. Spend a few minutes planning your response before beginning. For essay questions, include an introduction, a middle section with analysis, and a conclusion. Look for directive words like "discuss," "analyse," or "interpret" to guide your response. For practical questions, focus on issue spotting - recognise issues, explain impacts, and advise on actions.

Question timing
Allocate time based on the marks assigned to each question. Write down the times at the beginning to keep track. You don't have to answer questions in order, but ensure you leave enough time for the final question.

And finally
Some study sessions may be more productive than others. It's normal to feel on top of things sometimes and less so at other times. Stay positive and focus on the progress you've made.
