Downloadable paper CGT property return trial extended

HMRC have announced today that the 4-month trial of their downloadable paper CGT return for property disposals (form reference PPDCGT) will be extended until the end of September 2023. This trial, which began on 28 February 2023, was initiated after concerns were raised about digitally-excluded taxpayers’ (i.e. those unable to access a ‘Capital Gains Tax on UK Property’ account) having to telephone HMRC and ask for a paper form to report a property disposal within 60 days of completion.

This extension is welcomed by CIOT who, along with other professional bodies, have been calling for this to be made permanent to assist those who cannot access the online service. HMRC will continue to monitor the usage and effectiveness of the downloadable form, and further developments will be issued via the Agent Updates.

HMRC have also advised us that while the forms are available to download, use of the latest version of the form rather than photocopies of previous versions helps prevent delays to processing.
