Helen Whiteman

Chair of the webinar, Helen Whiteman joined the CIOT in September 2019 following being Chief Executive of CILEx Regulation Limited, a role she held since 2015. She studied Law at De Montfort University, before undertaking a Masters in IT at the University of Warwick. As Chief Executive of the CIOT Helen’s vision is to strengthen the tax profession through leading the CIOT membership, education and driving a relevant policy agenda.

AI Assurance Lead, Responsible Technology Adoption Unit, UK government

Nuala Polo

Panellist Nuala Polo is the AI Assurance Lead at the Responsible Technology Adoption Unit (RTA), a directorate within the UK government that works on enabling responsible innovation in AI and data driven technologies. Nuala’s work focuses on engaging with industry and regulators to drive the uptake of tools for trustworthy AI to operationalise and implement high-level policy principles in practice. Nuala is the UK delegate of the OECD’s working party on AI governance. She holds an MSc Cognition in Science and Society from the University of Edinburgh.

Dr Mhairi Aitken

Panellist Mhairi is an Ethics Fellow in the Public Policy Programme at The Alan Turing Institute, a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Digital Environment Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London and an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Wollongong, Australia. At the Alan Turing Institute Mhairi leads research on AI and children’s rights, as well as working across a range of topics including data justice, ethics of Generative AI and emerging AI policy and regulation. Mhairi was included in the 2023 international list of “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics” and is a frequent contributor to media discussions around AI and data.

Professional Standards Officer, CIOT

Marc Leach

A qualified ATT member, Marc previously worked within the Partner’s Tax Team at EY for 7 years. This role involved supporting the personal tax compliance obligations of the firm’s partners and other related parties. Marc joined CIOT in November 2022 as a Professional Standards Officer and is focused on supporting CIOT and ATT members in their requirement to meet both Professional Standards and AML obligations.
