New Tax Professionals: Tax Career Progression Through Levels

The New Tax Professionals (NTP) committee is aimed at helping students or members of the ATT and/or CIOT who are in the first ten years of their career. The committee host events such as development skills, networking, social events, technical and general interest topics that are particularly relevant to those in the early part of their career.
Tax Career Progression Through Levels This is in person event on Thursday 8 September, kindly hosted by PwC at 7 More London Riverside, London SE1 2RT This event will explore the topic of career progression with a focus on practical tips to help you successfully navigate the next ‘step up’ in your career. We have a fantastic panel of speakers, each at different levels in their tax career, and a recruiter and human resource representative. They will share their insights and experiences on how to make the most of career development opportunities. whether at your current organisation or elsewhere, whether in-house or in private practice and whether your next move will be to a mid-level or senior position. Lizzie Murray, CTA
Partner, Saffery Champness LLP
Lizzie is a partner within the Private Wealth and Estates Group in London, having joined Saffery Champness in 2011 from a Private Bank.
She works with families to support them in all aspects of their financial affairs, providing tax advice on transactions or events, and overseeing the compliance work for all related entities, such as companies, trusts and partnerships. Many of Lizzie’s clients have an international angle to their affairs and she frequently works with their other advisers to provide a multi-jurisdictional approach to managing their assets. Lizzie lives in South West London with her family. Outside of work she enjoys running, tennis and skiing.
Jade Selman, CTA
Senior Group Tax Manager, Priory Group
Jade started her tax career at a boutique firm in Glasgow in 2005 where she got experience in a variety of taxes including personal tax, corporate tax and VAT whilst studying for the ATT and CTA exams. Jade moved city and joined Mazars in Leeds in 2010 where she started to specialise in corporate tax. In 2013, Jade joined KPMG and gained Big 4 experience, working in a much larger tax department. After progressing to Manager grade, Jade started to specialise in capital allowances/innovation reliefs. It was this last role that gave Jade the confidence to make the move into industry to the Priory Group (Priory). Priory are the leading independent provider of behavioural care in the UK. Jade’s role very quickly expanded and in just under 2 years Jade has been involved in 2 large transactions, tax compliance for over 180 companies, implementing a policy on IR35, and capital allowances on an annual capex spend of £50m.
George Carter, CTA
Associate Director, RSM
Having joined RSM as a graduate, George has 10 years’ experience working with individuals, families and business owners with complex financial affairs. He is a key part of the London private client team, delivering compliance and advisory services to his clients. He has worked with clients across numerous sectors but invariably they are family led, and with both UK and international concerns.
Richard Kidd
Managing Director, RK Legal Recruitment Limited
Richard joined the legal recruitment market in 2008 as a tax specialist and has since dedicated his career to assisting corporate tax lawyers with theirs. Having established RK Legal Recruitment Ltd in 2013, Richard has built up solid relationships with almost every tax practice in the UK and has got to know almost every tax lawyer along the way - from newly qualified to senior partner level. The majority of his recruitment involves tax moves between law firms however, he also has relationships with the Big 4 professional services firms and has always kept very close to the ever-growing W&I/tax insurance market.
Claire Stones
Human Capital Leader, PwC
Claire is the Senior People Consultant for PwC Tax. She has spent her entire career with PwC, initially in Audit, then Corporate Tax before moving into Learning and Development and then as a HR Business Partner for the past 12 years. Claire specialises in leadership development, talent management, employee engagement, performance management and personal and team development. She is an experienced facilitator who has designed and led on numerous development programmes both for PwC employees and clients of the firm. Claire is an accredited Executive Coach and supports leaders in the business in their career progression. Her experience as a Chartered Accountant and HR professional enables her to provide pragmatic and business focused solutions to people matters.
