Professional bodies unite to urge Chancellor to improve HMRC service levels
The heads of ten leading UK professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Taxation, have signed an open letter urging Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to prioritise investment in HMRC’s service levels in his upcoming Budget statement on 15 March 2023.
Helen Whiteman, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, said:
“The problems currently faced by taxpayers and their advisers when trying to get in touch with HMRC are having a big impact on both businesses and individuals.
“The decreasing numbers of HMRC customer service staff and delays on phone lines make it harder for willing taxpayers to comply with their obligations. Our members tell us every day of the delays they face getting answers and action from HMRC – and the impact this is having on businesses and individuals.
“The Budget presents an opportunity to rectify this by properly investing in HMRC, improving customer service and effectiveness, and we urge the Prime Minister and Chancellor to make this a priority.”
